What a MC docket number is, and what it is not

MC-135797 is a motor carrier docket — historically the number FMCSA used to track one operating-authority registration. The distinction matters when you are checking a carrier packet: a docket tracks one operating-authority registration, not the company. One company can hold more than one, and the entity itself is identified by its USDOT number. If the docket on the paperwork resolves to a different name than the one on the rate confirmation, that is an identity question to settle before you tender a load — not a clerical detail.

FMCSA has proposed to stop assigning MC numbers, but states the change is under consideration, goes through a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, and did not take effect with the first release of its new registration system — and that existing MC numbers will not be replaced.
